Who we are…
The Road Crime Reporter Network connects local cycle groups and cyclists campaigning to improve the reporting of road crime. Cyclists frustrated at being threatened by close passes and other unsafe driving have come together to increase the detection of traffic offences and help the police act against offenders.
We are building the Road Crime Reporter Network (RCRN) across England and Wales and welcome new members in all police force areas. We work with the police nationally and locally to ensure the perspective of cyclists are represented in the development of road crime reporting systems.
Together we can:
Ensure the performance, transparency and accountability of police on reducing road harm
Give voice to cyclists to promote civic engagement and improve confidence in all police forces
Enable more people to walk, wheel and cycle by making our streets safer for active travel
How can we help the police detect and deter unsafe driving?
Roads policing officers need our help in reporting traffic offences. Police forces in England and Wales have established online portals through which video of driving offences can be quickly uploaded.
We can help identify careless driving which endangers others, ensuring over-stretched police forces build real partnerships with citizens in their area.
We can work together across the 43 police services in England and Wales to improve the performance of all forces and work towards best practice.
Why should cyclists work with the police to reduce road crime?
Cyclists have joined drivers, motor cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians in reporting careless driving offences across England and Wales. Cyclists are exposed to harm on the road when drivers do not meet the standards of their licence and follow the Highway Code. More people say they would cycle more often if it felt safer to do so.
DfT stats show cyclists were 368 times more likely to be seriously injured in a collision with a car than any car occupant in the collision (1).
The police need our help. As has been said many times, “the police cannot be everywhere all the time but the public can be anywhere at anytime”.
(1) 1 In England and Wales (2022), there were 8 car occupants seriously injured in collision with cycles compared to 2944 cyclists seriously injured in collision with car. DfT (2023) RAS0601: Reported road casualties by road user type and vehicle involved, Great Britain, ten years up to 2022
